Time for some Canberra love on this fine Tuesday.
Yes, Canberra! Lately, some of the best new music has been coming from there, with The Aston Shuffle, Citizen Kay, Peking Duk, Fun Machine all hailing from our nation’s capital and all being bloody awesome.
Safia have roared out of college (yes, Canberra has college for Yr.11/12), won the triple j unearthed, ‘Groovin’ the Moo’ competition last year and have embarked on their first national tour this year.
Now they have released a brand new single, ’ You Are The One’. The soulful vocals of Ben Woolner pull you into this slow burning groove. Safia have a knack of laying down seriously cruisy beats layered with electronica and vocals in an effortless way. I’m sure it’s not effortless to make, but when you listen to it, you just want to lie back, relax, close your eyes and do nothing but fall into the sounds..
So, whilst I have a Canberra background with strong connections to it as my home, there is no bias here. Safia are a force to be reckoned with and I am sure they will go from strength to strength as they mature into world-wide domination.
